One of my very best friends is doing an 18-month work program in Germany so my goal within those 18 months was to visit at least once. After randomly looking at flights one day I found a ridiculously great deal and booked it – it was too good to pass up and my fellow travelers out there know it’s a sin to waste serendipitous travel opportunities!
I had never thought of Germany as being one of the European countries at the top of my must-see list, but I was blown away by it all. The landscape is gorgeous, the cities are some of the cleanest I’ve ever seen, and the list of things to do is never ending.
I’ve just gotten home from the trip and am still riding my travel high, so I wanted to share a few of my favorite things from my 6-day visit. May is living in Bavaria, Germany in a town called Garmisch-Partenkirchenso we spent our days exploring this part of the country and made a quick trip to Salzburg, Austria.
Bavaria
We bundled up and battled the cold weather at the top of Zugspitze, the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountainsand the highest mountain in all of Germany.

As lovers of all things royal and palatial we also couldn’t forgo a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, a.k.a. the castle Disney designed Sleeping Beauty’s castle after. The front of the castle was under construction/renovation while we were there, but did that stop us from taking an absurd number of pictures? Definitely not.

We also got a peak into royal living at the Munich Residenz. With over 60 rooms on display, we spent a good three hours wandering through the palace trying to decide which room was our favorite.

Salzburg
And of course, the main purpose of our 24-hour trip to Salzburg was for the Sound of Music tour. My favorite parts of our time in Salzburg (other than the Sound of Music tour itself because that wins everything, always) was “sneaking into” the Mirabelle Gardens (which we think were closed because of the snow but that sure as sh*t wasn’t going to stop me from standing where Julie Andrews once stood)…

…and seeing the city from above at the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

So here you are – a few of my favorite thingsfrom our trip. More to come later; for now, I think I’ll re-watch The Sound of Music and pretend I’m still there.
